"Unrestored and well-preserved original condition. It has been in a dry climate and has never been damaged or rusted."

Description

A classic Mercedes 450SL with a nice history. The car was sold new in California in 1979, and the first owner, who kept the car for 43 years, received it as a wedding gift from her husband. In 2022, it was sold to a Swedish car enthusiast who brought it to Sweden and has used it as a summer car for two seasons. The first owner always invested in the recommended service and repairs by the workshops. When her husband, who was a director at a large hotel chain, served in Paris for a period, both she and the Mercan accompanied him. And when they returned to California, the car, of course, moved with them. The car comes with a lot of invoices and service records. Like many cars that have lived their lives in sunny California, the car has been repainted, in this case, in its original color, light blue metallic. This was done in 1998, and the paint is still in great condition with only a few minor scratches and stone chips. At the same time as the repaint, the front seats received a cosmetic overhaul, and the car was equipped with new Mercedes original alloy wheels. The total bill from Mercedes Pacific Motors in Santa Monica, 25 years ago, was just over 6,200 dollars. This is just one example of the invoices that come with the car and testify to how well the owner took care of her car. The 4.5-liter V8 engine was the largest engine available in 1979, providing good power, easy handling, and high comfort.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

The car starts easily and shifts smoothly. It handles well on the road, providing a stable and comfortable ride, even on rough surfaces. The idle speed is a bit high during cold starts but decreases as the engine warms up. The car has traveled 186,000 miles, which is approximately 29,000 kilometers. It has been consistently serviced at Mercedes dealerships throughout the years. The car comes with a factory-installed air conditioning and heating package, but its functionality is uncertain and may require inspection and maintenance to ensure proper operation.

  • Interior condition

The blue leather interior is in excellent original condition. Even the fabric floor mats are remarkably well-preserved considering their age. There are some cracks in the clear coat on the wood panel of the center console, and a few cracks on the upper part of the instrument panel have been repaired.

  • Exterior condition

The paint finish is glossy and in great condition, and the body is straight. There are a few small scratches and some stone chips. The front bumper has a couple of minor indentations behind the license plate area, which can be seen in the photos. Thanks to the dry climate on the West Coast of the USA, the car has never had any rust issues. It comes with a brand new dark blue soft top made from original Mercedes fabric, which was installed by a specialist in California before the car was transported to Sweden. The car also includes a hardtop in the same color as the car. The aluminum wheels are in excellent condition.

  • General condition

This is a high-quality Mercedes in a fresh and excellent condition. It boasts a solid and flawless body, an attractive interior, and an extensive service history, making it a delightful package.

Facts about the model

The Mercedes-Benz R107 was introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in the spring of 1971 and remained in production until 1989, making it one of Mercedes' longest-running models. Throughout its production, the basic body shape remained largely unchanged, with gradual updates to details. The engines available were either inline-sixes or V8s.

Starting from the fall of 1971, a coupe variant called the C107 was also available. It had a significantly longer wheelbase but shared the design language of the open-top model. The coupe model was discontinued in 1981.

When the R107, internally coded, took shape, Mercedes' chief designer Karl Wilfert was responsible for the design. The design was entirely new and updated, yet it maintained the tradition of clean, straight lines established by its predecessor, the Mercedes-Benz W113 (often referred to as the Pagoda). Karl Wilfert's design not only looked good but also considered safety requirements, especially those emerging in the United States. The new SL was approximately the same size as the Pagoda but weighed nearly 400 kilograms more, highlighting its robust and solid construction. For instance, the windshield frame was made extra strong to avoid the need for a roll bar.

The R107 model was a significant sales success for Mercedes. Despite being a high-priced car in its time, it sold close to 240,000 units over a production period of just over 18 years. Many of these were sold to the American market, and at least one of them was driven by Bobby Ewing in the classic TV series Dallas. After this, the car model became colloquially known as the "Dallas moped" in Sweden.
