Volkswagen Typ 1 bubbla oval Oval — 1955

A hard oval with reportedly matching numbers and a weathered exterior. 61 590 or 161 590 km, and the claim that an original engine from this era would have endured over 160 000 km seems less likely since engines in these cars were often replaced. Possibly an exceptionally attractive mileage in that case.

"A raw and in many ways a stylish user patina to simply leave as is, to drive with it in its current condition."

Description

It was likely originally sold in Småland and probably spent most of its active time in Skåne. The current owner purchased the car with his daughter just after the 2000 millennium shift from a scrap dealer named Kalle in Marklunda outside Osby in northern Skåne. A more detailed earlier history can surely be found in the National Archives for a curious and eager new owner. The owner's daughter used the car enthusiastically, including for visits to a new love interest in Åstorp and the surrounding area for a couple of years, with the last inspection done on June 4th, 2002. The mileage of 6,159 kilometers could be correct; from the mid-1980s until 2000, it likely wasn’t inspected or used in traffic. Since 2003, the car has been stored in a heated garage.

Condition

  • Mechanical condition

According to information, it's the original engine in place, and it sounds and runs robustly. The brakes are not functional, likely due to leaking wheel cylinders. However, the cable-operated parking brake works well. The last approved inspection was on June 4th, 2002, and therefore, the car's brakes/system need refurbishment. A new battery has been installed, and the engine starts easily.

  • Interior condition

The interior and seats are from a slightly newer model from the 1960s, but they are intact and reasonably clean. The roof is water-damaged and partially torn. The two stylish sun visors were optional equipment at the time.

  • Exterior condition

The car has a matte finish with cracked areas and surface rust. It has been repainted at some point in its history; the original blue metallic paint can be seen on the door frames and engine hood. The front hood has been replaced at some point. The current owner has welded parts of the sills and the metal needs to be smoothed and sealed by a new owner. The intentionally applied rust protection paint around the right headlight was done by the other co-owner – the daughter – in youthful enthusiasm.

  • General condition

Relatively easy project to turn into a functional and worn-in oval Beetle for road use. Requires oil service, brake renovation, and completing some bodywork. Also, perhaps searching for an original interior, whether new or old.
