"A Volkswagen Cabriolet in good enthusiast-owned condition. A few minor improvements are needed to bring it to an even higher standard."

Beschreibung

The current owner purchased the car in 1986 and became its third custodian, although records suggest that a transfer of ownership within the family took place shortly before the sale. When she acquired the car, it came with new front and rear fenders, fender beading, and running boards. Later that same year, a comprehensive refurbishment was carried out, during which rust was repaired, the new parts were installed, and the car was repainted. The interior surfaces were hand-painted with a brush, a common practice at the time.

The following year, in 1987, the underside was rustproofed to provide long-term protection against corrosion. Over the years, the car has been continuously maintained and improved. In 1990, the engine was replaced with a rebuilt exchange unit. The alternator and voltage regulator were replaced in 1999, while the master brake cylinder and rear wheel cylinders were renewed in 2006. In 2016, an electric windshield washer system was installed to improve usability.

Most recently, in 2024, the carburetor was overhauled. However, the work has not been fully completed, and the car is currently somewhat difficult to start. During the same year, the window seals were also replaced. The new seals were sourced through Volkswagen’s official parts network and function as intended, but due to modern material compositions, the fit is not quite as precise as that of the original pure-rubber seals. As a result, the windows should not be wound down completely below the level of the seal, as the seal may follow the glass downward and become distorted.

The car has covered just over 101,000 km (approximately 62,800 miles), which is relatively low considering its age. Under the current owner’s stewardship, it has only been driven during the summer months, from May through September, and only in favorable weather conditions. The documentation is well preserved, with receipts for completed work retained along with the original purchase receipt from 1986.

Recent inspection reports also reflect the car’s honest condition. During the 2019 inspection, rust was noted on the right-hand side sill, while the 2021 report recorded an advisory concerning the front right shock absorber. Apart from these remarks, the vehicle’s history reflects a car that has been carefully maintained and looked after for several decades.

Beurteilung Fahrzeugzustand

  • Zustand technisch

The engine is somewhat difficult to start, but once running and at higher revs, it performs smoothly. The fuel and ignition systems may benefit from further inspection and tuning. Apart from this, the car’s various systems are reported to function as intended. The finger pull on the fuel filler flap is broken; please refer to the photo for details.

  • Zustand Interieur

The interior is worn and shows signs of dirt and sun fading; please refer to the photos for details. With some attention and refurbishment, it has the potential to present much better.

  • Zustand Exterieur

The car was repainted some time ago and the finish is now in driver-quality condition with an attractive patina. There are a few minor paint imperfections and small areas of surface rust, as shown in the photos, but nothing that detracts significantly from the overall presentation. The underside appears to be in good condition, although the car has received inspection remarks in the past; please refer to the detailed description. The convertible top is in good, fully functional condition.

  • Zustand gesamt

Once the fuel system—and potentially the ignition system—has been attended to, this will make for an enjoyable convertible for summer drives and enthusiast gatherings. An honest and straightforward VW in pleasant driver-quality condition.

Fakten zum Modell

Following the start of Beetle production, convertible versions were introduced from 1949 onwards. Several variants were offered, including both two- and four-seater models, although the Karmann-built versions soon became dominant. From the outset, Karmann’s four-seater convertibles were known for their high level of craftsmanship and precision. This was particularly evident in the quality of the convertible top mechanism, which featured durable materials and was practical even during winter use. The convertible models evolved largely in parallel with the standard Beetle throughout their production life.

Later versions of the Volkswagen Type 1 became increasingly powerful, gained larger luggage compartments, and featured period-correct safety improvements such as integrated headrests. For the 1971 model year, the 1302 LS was introduced with the 1.6-litre engine producing 50 horsepower. In 1972, the engine lid was updated with 26 horizontal ventilation slots, while other changes were relatively minor. For 1973, the 1303 LS arrived with an all-new dashboard and a panoramic curved windscreen. Externally, it featured larger rear lights and a fuel filler flap with an integrated finger grip. The final LS models were imported into Sweden in 1974, and the last new Beetle Cabriolet was sold there the following year.

Volkswagen ceased Beetle production in Germany in 1978, but Karmann continued building the Cabriolet until 1980. Although the car had evolved significantly from the original model introduced more than thirty years earlier, it still retained much of the same character and charm that had made the Beetle so beloved.
